How to create your yoga brand: A step-by-step guide for yoga teachers

As a yoga teacher, your brand is more than just a logo or a gorgeous Insta feed.

Your brand is the essence of who you are, what you offer, and how you connect with your yogis.

A strong brand that reflects you can, and will, help you stand out, attract your yogis and - perhaps most importantly - boost your confidence as a yoga teacher.

If you’re wondering where to start - don’t worry! In this guide, we’ll walk you through creating your brand, step by step. By the end, you’ll have a brand that’s 100% you.

Why do you need a yoga brand?

Let’s start with the big question - why does a yoga teacher even need a yoga brand? Ugh! Isn’t yoga more about connection than self-promotion?

Well, your brand isn’t about being salesy or shouty - it’s simply about being you. A clear brand help you:

  • Attract your yogis - those who resonate with your teaching style, your values and your why

  • Boost your confidence - often our confidence wains when we’re comparing ourself to others. But with a clearly defined brand, you. know what you stand for, and you can show up with more confidence in every class, workshop or online offering.

Think of your yoga brand as the foundation of everything you do as a yoga teacher; whether to cover that class or not, how much to charge, what to write in your instagram captions, what to call your next workshop - all of it is underpinned by defining your yoga brand.

Step 1: Define

Your yoga brand starts with you. Grab a notebook and a pen, and start to write down your answers to:

  • Define your values and your mission as a yoga teacher.

  • Define the desires and pain points of the yogi's that you want to work with.

  • Define the opportunities you have found in your space.

For example, maybe you’re on a mission to help runners understand that yoga can help reduce injuries, or you’d like to work with people in bigger bodies, or you’re motivated to bring yoga to busy, super stressed office workers. Whatever it is; your values and mission should light a fire inside of you!

Step 2: Get inspired

This is a really enjoyable, fun part of creating a brand. Maybe you use a noticeboard on your wall, or a Pinterest board on your computer, and you pull in anything that speaks to you:

  • Colours

  • Fonts

  • Design styles

  • Anything that resonates with you!

As you add to your yoga brand board, you might start to notice themes and commonalities that really resonate with you - great - this is all really important.

Step 3: Create your brand!

There’s two ways to create your brand:

  • Use an online design tool, such as Canva

  • Recruit a brand designer to create your yoga brand for you

Use your mission, values and brand board to make your yoga brand deeply reflect who you are, how you teach, and how you want to make people feel.

Step 4: Test your yoga brand

Test your brand with your ideal yogis to determine if your choices reflect your values and mission. We have a list of ‘what to ask’ over on The Base - take look here

Once you've tested, return back to the creation of the brand, apply any updates from your testing, and then test it again.

Once you're confident your brand reflects what you want to communicate, it’s time to celebrate!!

Step 5: Create your brand guidelines document

I know, I know. Snore. But this is so important. When you're in the thick of the brand creation, you'll be thinking ‘I'll never forget this colour or the name of your font.’ But believe me, when you're off doing other things and you just need to get the information, your guidelines will prove priceless!
